The Science of Tears and Benefits of Crying
بسم اللّٰہ الرحمٰن الرحیم
Tears are linked to emotions, from joy to sorrow, but beyond expressing feelings, they play a crucial role in keeping our eyes healthy. The complex science behind tears goes beyond mere emotional release. It spans a circle where tears become an important component of eye health.
Tear Film Production: Its Parts and Glands
The clear, thin fluid layer at the surface of eyes is called tear film. It helps to maintain moisture and provides nutrients and protection to the surface of eyes. It consists of three layers:
Lipid Layer
The lipid layer prevents the tear film from disappearing and is delivered to the tear film by the meibomian glands.
Aqueous Layer
The aqueous layer hydrates the eye, provides supplements and contains antibodies. This layer is secreted by lacrimal glands.
Mucin Layer
Function of mucin layer is that it helps the aqueous layer spread evenly over the cornea.
It is produced by goblet cells in the conjunctiva.
Accessory Lacrimal Glands
The accessory lacrimal gland (glands of Krause and Wolfring) are located in the conjunctiva of the eye. They produce a small, stable amount of fluid that helps maintain the basal tear film, keeping the eye constantly lubricated and protected.
Types of Tears
There are three types of tears based on their function:
1-Basal Tears
2-Reflex Tears
3-Emotional tears
1.Basal Tears (The Everyday Protectors):
Constant moisture present in eyes is termed as basal tears. Basal tears protect and nourish eyes and continuously maintain hydration.
Mucus, water, oil, proteins and antibodies present in basal tears helps prevent dry eyes, maintain a clear visual surface and protect against infection.
2-Reflex Tears (The Responders):
Reflex tears are produced when irritants like smoke, dust, or onions get in your eyes. They quickly help clear out these substances and have more antibodies than regular tears to fight off germs.
3- Emotional Tears (The Healers):
Emotional tears are tied to our feelings. Researchers narrate that emotional tears contain stress hormones and toxins that are released during emotional states. Crying helps the body naturally eliminate these substances, reducing stress.
Emotional Tears: The Science
Emotional tears are particularly interesting due to their distinct composition. Stress related hormones ACTH and prolactin are released in emotional tears when someone cries, so emotional tears wipe these hormones and we feel better and relaxed after crying.
A natural pain reliever “leucine enkephalin” is also present in emotional tears and it helps to reduce pain and stress. So as a result of this chemical release overall emotional state improves.
Benefits of Crying
Emotional and Psychological Health
1-Stress Relief
Tears as Emotional Detoxifiers
Crying helps lower stress hormones in the body. When we cry, these chemicals are flushed out through our tears, reducing stress and so we feel calm and relaxed.
2-Mood Improvement
The Endorphin Connection
Endorphin is natural chemical in body that is released in state of crying. It naturally works as mood booster, so we feel good after crying.
3-Catharsis
Mental clarity and emotional equilibrium are achieved when we cry because it allows us to discharge pent-up feelings. We are able to process our emotions more fully and proceed with greater ease when we allow ourselves to cry.
Benefits of Crying on Physical Health
Cleansing Effect
Keeping our eyes clear and free of debris is mostly dependent on tears. Reflex tears are particularly good at removing harmful substances. This cleaning process helps maintain eye health and prevent infection.
Antimicrobial Properties
Tears as a Natural Defense Mechanism
Tears have lysozyme in them. Bacterial cell walls are broken down by this enzyme. Being a natural defense against eye infections, it eliminates microorganisms.
Hydration
Through continuous hydration, basal tears shield the eyes from drying out and irritation. Pain and potential corneal damage may result from untreated dry eye syndrome. Our eyes stay cozy and hydrated when the tear film is in good condition.
When Crying Becomes a Concern
Possible Underlying Health Problems Related to Crying
Tears are a natural and acceptable response to emotions, but they can also indicate deeper health problems when they are excessive.
Crying may become more frequent in situations like
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Hormone abnormalities
One should be able to identify when crying is becoming a problem and some medical help is needed.
Why Does Head Hurt After Crying
Several factors can cause headaches after crying. Following are some main causes
1.Dehydration
Dehydration can occur, as fluid loss happens after excessive crying. So it might be a reason behind headache after crying.
2. Muscle Tension
Muscles of face, neck and head can become tensed due to frequent crying. It can cause tension headache.
3. Sinus Pressure
Crying often causes nasal congestion and sinus pressure, which can contribute to headaches.
4. Emotional Stress
The intense emotions that lead to crying can also contribute to stress-related headaches.
These factors can combine to make your head hurt after a long crying session. Drinking water, resting, and gently massaging the temples or neck can help ease the pain.
When to get Medical Help
Uncontrollably crying all the time may indicate a mental health issue such as anxiety or depression.
Signs to identify
• Feelings of hopelessness
• Appetite or sleep pattern changes
• Loss of interest in activities
• Persistent sadness
These are some of the indicators that should be identified.
A mental health professional can offer the required treatment and support if needed.
Balancing Emotional Expression and Mental Health
Emotional expression and mental health maintenance must coexist in harmony.
If one feels better after crying then its fine to express your emotions. But if this state becomes persistent and out of control then it’s time to get some medical advice.
So it can be concluded that both, our mental and physical health are influenced by crying. When we understand the science behind tears and benefits of crying it can help us to appreciate this natural process. Knowing when to cry and when it may indicate a health problem also enables us to manage our condition as needed.
So, the next time you feel like crying, accept it as a natural and healthy response to challenges of life.
